A wonderful town with a rich history. In days of yore coach drivers would hazard a trip to the castle in order to assess the efficacy of their new eyeglasses, a tradition that has continued to this day.

Lovely old town, cobbled streets, with the excellent Bowes museum and Raby Castle nearby. Historic. Visited by Oliver Cromwell and Charles Dickens.

I love Barnard Castle. Lovely shops, cafes, walks, and river walks, and of course the Castle it self.

Great castle, lots of interesting bits left to explore, fascinating architecture, great views of surrounding area, helpful staff and interesting information displays. I also saw a rabbit in the grounds

A nice small town feel to this rural community but with lots to do. There are numerous cafes, restaurants, pubs, hotels and shops. A great little place to visit. The castle giving the town its name is hidden behind the Church on the main street.

Delightful market town with good parking, some free parking, some pay and display. Lovely River walks and by the castle , play areas at the scar top for the kids and a must is a visit to the Bowes Musium and it's delicious coffee house and bistros.

Set in nice grounds. Rather expensive to go in the castle.

Very good views from the outer walls, I recommend taking your time reading the plaques and allowing your imagination muscle to flex. Well worth joining english heritage. As you'll save the more castles you visit.

Large ruin of a medieval castle, extensive remains of the outer curtain wall, and some of the inner buildings. There is plenty of room for kids to run around and the usual information boards. Has a small shop and toilet. There is no parking on site, but there plenty of parking in the town and relatively cheap.
